Hi all!

A lot of friends have been curious about how I manage so many free things for my birthday (this year’s count – 64 offers received!) so I thought I’d put up a post detailing what I got for everyone’s reference.

This will be in chronological order of when I got the freebie/offer/etc, since that’s how I have them listed in my master list.

Dear writer or artist,

Hi there! Forgive me if this letter seems awkward, this is my first time participating in one of these. :) I look forward to whatever you create for me. There's nothing I love more than fic or art that's created for me, no matter what it is. So thank you in advance!!

(will be editing this post later with prompt suggestions...it's late and my brain is not coming up with any at the moment)

General likes/dislikes:

-I'm asexual so sex really doesn't interest me. Honestly, as soon as characters start making out I'm pretty tuned out. But I do like stuff like cuddling or fluffy sweet relationships, if that makes sense. :)

-I love AUs and what if scenarios. I'm also big on unusual crossovers, I love seeing characters from different fandoms interact. (my NaNoWriMo novel one year was basically how many fandoms can I shove in the TARDIS at once)

-I love my hometown and go nuts over fics/art set in Chicago. :D

Kamen Rider W

-Currently my top favorite fandom. I do ship Philip & Shotaro, but as partners and very close friends. As soon as a fic has them actually making out, I'm done. But doing sweet stuff for each other, cuddling, going out on a "date", that's all good.
-I totally ship Ryuu and Akiko and I love that it's now canon that they're married with a daughter. Especially love that Ryuu is totally wrapped right around his little girl's finger. Again, I'm not at all interested in sex, but I do ship them and I love their goofy way of showing their love in the show (particularly the fact that Ryuu never calls her Akiko, just "Chief", that's too adorable IMO).
-I don't really ship Philip and Wakana, cuz well they're siblings, but I do like their relationship in the latter part of the show when Wakana starts accessing the Library. It's an interesting dynamic.
-They're not on the tag list but I adore Shotaro's little circle of "informants" - Santa-chan, Watcherman, Queen & Elizabeth, Jinno & Makura. Feel free to toss them in!

Prompt ideas:

-Philip researching Halloween

-Halloween Dopant?

-Story based on the following text message convo (from a random Facebook page), could be either Philip or Shotaro as the drinker (though my friends and I think it's more likely Shotaro)
Text message convo

Doctor Who (both classic and new)

-Fourth Doctor is my favorite! I love teaming him up with anyone, really. Companions from other eras (I'm fond of teaming him with my all-time favorite Companion, Jamie MacCrimmon), or even characters from other fandoms.
-Seven and Ace are another favorite pairing. Their dynamic is just so fun! "Ace, give me some of that Nitro-9 you're not carrying" :)
-My favorite new series Doctor is Capaldi. I like him with Clara, but I'd also love to see him with other companions.
-Favorite new series companions are Donna, Madame Vastra & Jenny, and Amy & Rory.
-I like Captain Jack in Doctor Who but I'm kinda turned off on Torchwood. Long story, just...no Torchwood please.

Prompt ideas:

-The Doctor taking a companion or companions to the "first" Halloween (could be first Halloween in the modern commercial sense or early Samhein.

Highlander: the Series

-Methos. Methos. Methos. I just love reading about the world's oldest man. Especially if he's snarky and annoying the crap out of Duncan.

Prompt ideas

-Methos getting dragged into a costumes-required party at Joe's bar.

-Methos has to deal with some modern-day wanna-be "Horsemen"

Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger

-I love snarky Marvelous. (especially in Zyuohger! OMG he was so snarky and cute!)
-The best part of Gokaiger was that they're space pirates and clueless about Earth. Them exploring Earth stuff is so much fun!

Prompt ideas

-Gokaigers getting introduced to Halloween

Kamen Rider Ghost

-I don't really have any ships in the show, I just love Takeru and how he's always trying to help others.
-Onari and Akari are the best comedy duo and they crack me up with their unintentional humour.

Prompt ideas

-Takeru sneaking into a Halloween party as an invisible ghost.

Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger

-Again, no ships. I love the friendship among the whole team.
-One of my favorite episodes so far was when Sela and Leo had to fight. I loved how she was mad at Leo for holding back because she's a girl. That toughness is one of the best things about Sela.
-I adored the crossover with Gokaiger for the 1999th & 2000th episodes. The Gokaigers and Zyuohgers working together was the best!

Prompt ideas

-Zyuohgers going trick or treating with Uncle Mario, in their Zyuman forms.

I guess that's it! Feel free to post comments with questions...I think I set it so anonymous comments are allowed

Seeing as my birthday is in less than a week, guess it's time to post up my wish list for this year. :)

1. Anything from my Amazon or ThinkGeek wish lists.
2. Anything from my friend's shop, Novus Antiquae - I love her jewelry but I don't have the money to spare to buy it ALL which is what I totes would do. But seriously - buy her stuff, it's gorgeous!
3. A digital SLR camera that can do photos and video. I miss having a good SLR and I also miss making videos. I'd like to stick to Nikon, I already have a Nikon film SLR, but since I only have the one lens I'm still open to moving brands. :)
4. Xbox Live Gold time, or gift cards to iTunes, Amazon, Xbox, Nintendo, Starbucks, etc.
5. Help making some of my dream costumes that I don't have the skills to make just yet!
6. Artwork of my favorite Doctor and favorite companion from Doctor Who (Fourth Doctor, Jamie MacCrimmon). :)
7. Amigurumi toys! I suck at crochet but there's so many cute amigurumi out there :)
8. There's certain patches I'm looking to add to my jacket that I'm having trouble finding - specifically I want to add Chicago Bulls, Chicago Bears, and Chicago Blackhawks to the jacket since I have a nice Cubs patch. But I'm having trouble finding any, the only one I've found was a Blackhawks one for $15. :( I also am missing an Apollo 13 mission patch and a Space Shuttle Program patch (I have one on an old pair of coveralls from high school but I can't find it).
9. I love getting handmade gifts in general! Yeah I've got lots of stuff on my wishlist, but handmade gifts are special. :) (I'm particularly addicted to homemade soaps...I'm so sad I'm nearly out of my Jelly Baby scented soap from False Nostalgia on Etsy)
10. I would like the universe to stop beating on my friends! Be nice to us universe!

If you're getting me something that's not directly on the Amazon or ThinkGeek wish lists (which will supply my address), email me at maryjo @ ghostbusterschicago . com (without the spaces of course) for my address :)

(For those wondering - here's the guidelines I'm following:
Step One
- Make a post (public, friendslocked, filtered...whatever you're comfortable with) to your LJ. The post should contain your list of 10 holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple and fandom-related ("I'd love a Sam/Dean icon that's just for me") to medium ("I wish for _____ on DVD") to really big ("All I want for Christmas is a new car/computer/house/TV.") The important thing is, make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.
- If you wish for real life things (not fics or icons), make sure you include some sort of contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where Santa (or one of his elves) could get in touch with you.
- Also, make sure you post some version of these guidelines in your LJ, or link to this post (it'll be public) so that the holiday joy will spread.
- Don't forget to post your list to Wish List as well as your journal. It's an open comm so you don't have to join to post. The more your list is seen, the greater the chance that someone out there can fullfill your wishes.

Step Two
-Surf around your friendslist (or friendsfriends, or just random journals) to see who has posted their list. And now here's the important part:
- If you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. Sometimes someone's trash is
another's treasure, and if you have a leather jacket you don't want or a gift certificate you won't use--or even know where you could get someone's dream purebred Basset Hound for free--do it.)

Today I have reached a milestone on a journey that has taken me nearly a year.

It began at Chicago TARDIS last year, when I picked up my copy of the book Outside In: 160 New Perspectives on 160 Classic Doctor Who Stories by 160 Writers. I spent the weekend adding lots of autographs to it – I know several of those 160 writers!

After the con I sat down to read. I decided to start like I always do – with my friends’ essays first. I chose to read my friend Sarah’s essay, and though she doesn’t know it (well, she will now I guess), she sparked an idea. Her essay talked about sound and how it was so important in the serial. I had not seen that particular serial and I thought, this would be even better if I had just seen the serial before reading this!

So I made it my New Year’s resolution to watch ALL of Doctor Who, in order, from Unearthly Child to The Name of the Doctor. After each serial, I’d read the accompanying essay from Outside In.

Tonight, I finished the biggest chunk, the classic series, with the television movie starring the Eighth Doctor. Since I’d already seen all of New Who before this journey, I have now officially seen all of Doctor Who at least once.

This has been an interesting journey to say the least. It started out slowly, with frequent trips to recreation land as I traveled through the wastelands of the first two Doctors whose body of work was nearly destroyed by the BBC. As I traveled on, I started grabbing DVDs from the library when they were available.

Reading the different perspectives in Outside In added an additional layer to the journey. It was fun to see how the different writers’ opinions sometimes meshed with mine and sometimes differed.

I’ve also gained a new perspective on the eleven amazing gentlemen who have portrayed the title role. Going into this, Four was my Doctor; Ten and Eleven were toward the top; One and Six were toward the bottom. Coming out of it, my ordering is way different. Four is still my Doctor, and ever will be MY Doctor. I may have started with Ten (my first episode was “Daleks in Manhattan”), but once I began to watch more of the classic series the more I fell for Tom.

The new Doctors have actually fallen pretty far in my rankings as I’ve discovered the different classic Doctors. One is more than just a cranky old man, when given the right situation he could be downright cunning and clever (oh how fun was “Reign of Terror” for clever manipulative One!). Two was more than just a clown. The team of Two and Jamie was simply fantastic!! Three could really kick butt when the chips were down, and what a snazzy dresser!! Four….oh, Four. My Doctor. He could move from playing dumb to throw people off the scent to cleverly manipulating the situation to his advantage to cheerfully taking his companions on mind-boggling adventures. Five was one of the few classic Doctors to fall in my rankings. While he was still an excellent Doctor, he was a bit too bland for my taste. Six, now that I’ve seen all of his televised adventures, was a way better Doctor than the writers gave him credit for. Big Finish really redeemed him, but I could see a glimmer of the real Six under the bad writing. But “The Two Doctors” was a great romp, really my favorite of the team-ups. Six and Jamie make a terrific pair, Jamie is a much better foil for Six than Peri. Seven flipped between clownish and manipulating with amazing skill and made me swoon every time he rolled his r’s. Once Mel left and he teamed up with Ace, they made a great team and I really wish they had gotten a season or two more – they worked so well together.
In ten days, Doctor Who celebrates its 50th anniversary. 26 seasons of classic Who, 7 seasons of new Who, plus a TV movie, two spin-off series, two spin-off movies, and a spin-off pilot. Not to mention countless Big Finish audiobooks and tie-in novels from multiple publishers. The show’s popularity is greater than ever – the anniversary episode will be broadcast simultaneously across the world, there’s Doctor Who merchandise available at mainstream stores like Hot Topic and Spirit Halloween, and Doctor Who cosplayers can be found in droves at fan conventions everywhere.

I can’t wait for the week after the anniversary, when Chicago TARDIS celebrates fifty years with three Doctors, several companions, and a number of writers. While I enjoy hanging out with fellow Doctor Who fans at other conventions or at the photoshoots my friend and I run, nothing compares to CT, where the focus is entirely on Doctor Who. This will be my first year staffing the convention, which will be a new adventure itself!

So here’s to fifty years! I’ve enjoyed my romp through the first 33 of them, and I look forward to spending the next ten days revisiting the other 17! And of course, I can’t wait to see what new adventures are in store when the Twelfth Doctor joins us next month!

You can help put a TARDIS into orbit
to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who

The 50th anniversary special of Doctor Who will be momentous, what with the return of David Tennant and Matt Smith’s penultimate appearance in the lead role.

But that’s not the only celebration of the Doctor scheduled for the big anniversary.

A father/daughter team of engineering-inclined Whovians designed a light-weight TARDIS and plan to launch it into space via commercial rocket, with the aim of having it orbit the earth in perpetuity.

They’re very detail-oriented—heading off pedants by noting they replaced the usual frosted glass window panes with solar panels, which power the light on top and a camera to take pictures of Earth.

Since launching a rocket into space is, you know, kind of expensive, they’ve started a kickstart campaign in the hope that fellow Doctor Who fans will put up over $30,000 to put a flying phone booth in the same level of orbit as the International Space Station, so that somehow, someway, an astronaut could look out a window and say, “Hey look, there’s a little phone booth outside!”

This post was inspired by discussion in the Chicago NaNoWriMo Facebook group, about software. I’ve used Scrivener 1.0 for a while, and just upgraded to 2.0 thanks to the latest MacHeist bundle. I just recently downloaded the NaNoWriMo trial of Storyist. So I thought I’d spend a little time playing with both. This is my pre-NaNoWriMo review, I’m sure I’ll have an updated commentary about these programs after November.

Warning: This is a graphic-heavy post, I’ve included a number of screen captures of the programs (they’re loaded in a smaller size and you can click through to full size but they’re still not small files).

My undergrad degree is in Mass Media and Theatre, with some Communications (my degree actually says "Speech & Performing Arts" but the department changed its name a year later to Communications, Media and Theatre)

My graduate degree is a Master's in Library and Information Science.

I'm currently working as a cataloger. So I use the grad work more but occasionally my theatre background comes in handy :)

I'm sure some of you might have noticed a couple of crossposts from Wordpress but I thought I'd make it official. I'm moving away from LJ, at least partially. I'll still probably be around commenting and reading - there's a few comms I'm still interested in, but as far as posting I'm not going to use LJ as my primary journal anymore. I've started a self-hosted Wordpress blog at my website, http://blog.knitchick.info Feel free to follow me there :) I'll still crosspost some of my posts here, but I'll mostly be posting to Wordpress (and it automatically tweets when I put a new post up there).

Anyway, you can find me at http://blog.knitchick.info :D

Hi all!

I will be writing up a full convention report probably tomorrow or Friday (had to dive right into homework), but I wanted to post that I have uploaded my photos.  They’re all up on Facebook, and the last of the photos are heading up to Flickr right now.  http://www.flickr.com/photos/knitchick1979 under the Chicago TARDIS 2011 set.

Highlights of this convention year: Matthew Waterhouse & Janet Fielding trading barbs about knit Daleks, winning the $25,000 Pyramids of Mars game, getting tons of nice comments about my super awesome geeky engagement, talking wedding plans/ideas with Tony Lee, and getting Mark Sheppard to pose for a photo by Mad Girl’s TARDIS with the Traveling Duckies!

Full report to come soon! :)

I know, I've been totally neglecting LJ of late. I've been super busy and I haven't really had much to blog about. Plus I started working on my new website.

But, I have decided to squeeze in some time to do a commission or two for the scarf.

Phew! This was one crazy weekend! I hope Wizard World doesn't come up against Relay again next year - I need that recovery time. :)

Relay went REALLY well this year. Thanks for the dry thoughts - it looked like we might have rain and then it all disappeared! We just had a little shower around 4 am that was hardly anything.

Final totals won't be added up for a bit yet, but the numbers announced at closing ceremonies put Team GEEK at just over $3,000! We have our Bronze Team sign, and it looks like we might even hit Silver before the Relay fiscal year ends August 31st.

We pulled the raffle winners - Congrats to Esther L. who won the Scarf, Stephanie C. who won the Dalek, and Gina & Jenny L. who won A Reasonable Facsimile Theatre Company tickets!! The video is on You Tube at http://youtu.be/_vi2S6XpXdk

Other teams were pushing their raffles, and I bought a couple of tickets from the Shamrock Angels, and won me a pair of Medieval Times tickets!! Considering that [livejournal.com profile] rengeek and I were just recently talking about going there (and discovering they charge $60 a person), it was the perfect win! (that makes TWO expensive dates I've won for us this summer, as I also won dinner for two at Chama Gaucha, which I'm betting is really pricey)

Saturday was the day of sleep through EVERYTHING including massive severe thunderstorms. :)

Sunday [livejournal.com profile] rengeek and I were back at Wizard World/Chicago Comic-con. This is a convention I really don't feel like is worth paying for anymore, especially since they overcharge for EVERYTHING - I mean, celebrities I've met and gotten autographs from before were at least $10 more than I'd paid for at other venues (like, Tia Carrere was charging $30 instead of the $20 at Hollywood Palms or Kai Owen charging $20 when his autograph was free at Chicago TARDIS). I really don't like paying $40 to spend a day doing nothing but spending MORE money.

That said, I'd be happy to keep going if I'm doing a booth with the Ghostbusters: Chicago Division. We had our Ecto on display (thanks to Jerry, who did an AMAZING AWESOME job putting it together!!), along with the Vigo lifesize poster, ecto containment unit, and a few miscellaneous props. We were letting people pose for pics with the car, and even wear a proton pack if they donated $1 to the American Cancer Society. We raised over $500, wow! :) Plus it was just so much fun talking to people and posing for photos and even helping the little kids put the pack on. I'd rather spend all day hanging around the Ecto in gear than shopping any time, besides, it keeps me from spending much! I actually only spent $10 at the con itself (for a Browncoats parking permit & a Proton Pack Operator's License)

[livejournal.com profile] huskyfriends and I also brought the Sarah Jane Traveling Duckie around to visit some people - she met Kai Owen, Charisma Carpenter, Batman, some artists in Artist's Alley, and more. :) I purchased a TARDIS boarding pass for her so she's ready for her travels. We talked up Relay and our team a bit as well!

The highlight of the day though was meeting Jason Narvy (Skull from Power Rangers)! I was standing at the back of our booth and I look over and go "OMG am I dreaming or did Jason Narvy just walk into our booth??" Nope, I was not dreaming. SO not dreaming. He walked back with Zach and Zach asked if Jason could wear my proton pack (which just happened to be sitting on the floor back there) for photos. Of course I said yes! I can't wait to get my laptop fixed & behaving so I can actually POST the pictures. But EPIC AWESOME. :D :D :D Then he tried Ecto Cooler (yes, we had Ecto Cooler! Our esteemed leader Dan has cracked the recipe - it's at http://www.ghostbusterschicagodivision.com ) He was really cool, and it was so awesome to meet him. I'm still on cloud nine!

At the end of the con day the guy in the booth across from us put on the Ghostbusters theme so we all got out there in front of our booth & danced to it. The song ended just as the announcement that the con floor was closed went out. We packed up & then I took [livejournal.com profile] rengeek and Steve out to Fox & the Hound for wrestling after dropping [livejournal.com profile] huskyfriends off at home. I got some knitting done :D because I really don't care about wrestling.

Now I should finish journaling & actually get some knitting done at knitting group!

I've been really bad about updating this journal, so sorry. Between computer issues (Lion is a memory hog!) and fundraising for Relay I've been super busy!

Relay is this Friday, and there's still time to donate! We have some awesome fundraisers for Team GEEK this year.

First up - this year we are auctioning off a hand-knit Doctor Who scarf and a hand-knit Dalek! I know a few of my LJ friends have been wanting a Dalek, and my friend & teammate [livejournal.com profile] wtf is delivering. Every $5 in donations gets you one ticket in the raffle. Donate to me for the scarf (please say it's for the scarf raffle in the notes field), or to Julie for the Dalek (again, please say so in the notes). Donations recieved up until noon on Friday will count (after that we'll be setting up & not as easily able to go online). You can also donate to us in person at our event & get in on the raffle!

The night of the event we will have photos with costumed characters, Disney Princesses and Ghostbusters, for a $1 donation. Bring out the kids or kids-at-heart to get a photo with their favorite character! Details on where, when, & how to get there are at our website, http://teamgeek.glomp.net on the event info page (there's even a Google map link!) We'll also be selling sweet treats, raffle tickets for some fun items (including Ravinia lawn tickets), and face painting!

Last, but certainly not least, we have an online auction going on! Check out the lots & details at our team blog, http://teamgeek-relay.blogspot.com/

Think dry thoughts for us Friday night, and please come join us if you're local! We'd love to see you!

Hi all!

Yes, I'm alive. I've been busy but nothing really noteworthy enough to update here. Until now!

Some of you may remember that last year I raffled off a knit Dalek to raise money for my Relay for Life team. Unfortunately those darn Daleks are painful to knit & I have retired from doing so. So instead this year I will knit a Fourth Doctor scarf instead!

It will be raffled off in the same way - one entry for every $10 in donation to my Relay bank as long as you mention the raffle in the note field. So, donating $30 will get you three entries.

I have some of the yarn (I ended up using way less than expected on the Season 16/17 scarf I just did), so I just need to pick up three skeins and I can start. I will have enough for either a Season 12, Season 13, or Season 14.

I dunno. It would take some money, but if I can have my knitting and books I guess I could survive. I would definitely have withdrawal like woah. Cuz just recently when my home internet went down it was hard enough but then when I forgot my phone in my friend's car & was without it for about 5 hours I *really* suffered withdrawal. I watched TV and flipped through books but not being able to text my boyfriend or check my email was rough.

I freely admit I am addicted to the internet & even worse to my iPhone. But yeah I guess you could pay me to give all that up for a week. Especially if it's enough money to buy an iMac and Photoshop ;)
