Story Title: "Fair fa' the sonsie Doctor"
Show: Classic Who
Character/Relationships: Doctor (Two), Jamie MacCrimmon
Rating: (PG, PG-13, R, NC-17) G

"Jamie! Jamie, what's taking you so long?" the Doctor called, leaning out of the TARDIS doors and peering around for his wayward companion. Victoria had already retired to her room, exhausted from the events earlier in the day.

Finally a path of light appeared in the street and a slender man in a red tartan kilt staggered out of a doorway, which promptly slammed behind him. He peered around and smiled when he saw the familiar blue box just across the alley. He waved to the Doctor, then grabbed hold of the doorknob behind him to keep from swaying.

"Jamie! Come on lad, we need to get going!" the Doctor called.

Jamie pushed himself from the doorway and began to walk unsteadily toward the TARDIS. The Doctor stepped outside the doors and watched him for a moment before hurrying over and offering an arm.

"Gude e'en Doctor," Jamie slurred. "I swoorn the TARDIS was nearer..."

"What happened Jamie?" the Doctor asked. "Where have you been all night?"

"In the' yill-shop," Jamie replied, waving a hand vaguely in the direction of where he'd come from. "I ken a few lads, we had some stour-o'-words an' then a round wi' th' deil's books. There was a habble-hobble though... but I'm halescart!"

The Doctor stared at Jamie, concern etched into his features. "Jamie, are you certain you're all right? Were you injured?"

"Dinnae kerk me Doctor! I'm no randy! I'm just drussie... an' drucken," Jamie insisted, wobbling a little.

The Doctor pulled Jamie into the TARDIS, half-dragging him through the control room and into the infirmary. "Come along Jamie, I think we need to take a look at your brain."

"Gorsh Doctor! I'm just drussie! Leave me alone!" Jamie insisted, fighting the Doctor's efforts to get him to lay down on the infirmary bed.

"Now, Jamie, this won't hurt a bit! I just want to make sure you weren't hurt in that, that... whatever that place was you were in."

"It's just a yill-shop!" Jamie protested. "I'm no randy!"

The Doctor managed to tie down a wiggling Jamie to the bed. "Just hold still, I want to do a brain scan." He pulled a scanning device over to the bed and ran it over Jamie's head.

"Well Doctor? Do I have th' cling?" Jamie asked.

The Doctor didn't answer Jamie at first. "The scanner shows you're perfectly fine, other than being slightly inebriated." He released the straps holding Jamie to the bed.

"Ye are a fair cawn aoul Doctor!" Jamie said, standing up slowly. "Now will ye help me tae me bed?"

"Yes, certainly," the Doctor said, and led Jamie from the infirmary.

END

(and since it seems like things might have gotten a bit lost in translation... a glossary and translated version!)

Glossary (in order of use)

fair = pleasant (adj) ; very (adv.)
fa' = who
sonsie = there's many meanings but I used it to mean good-tempered
gude e'en = good evening
swoorn = sworn
yill-shop = an alehouse
ken = to know
stour-o'-words = wordy discourse
deil's books = playing cards
habble-hobble = a rumpus or hubbub
halescart = safe and sound
dinnae = do not
kerk = to scold or nag
randy = a beggar ; a ruffian ; disorderly
drussie = drowsy
drucken = drunken
gorsh = an exclamation or oath
cling = diarrhoea in sheep
cawn aoul = a cunning person

And here's how Jamie's lines would read translated:

"Gude e'en Doctor," Jamie slurred. "I swoorn the TARDIS was nearer..."

"Good evening Doctor, I swore the TARDIS was nearer..."

"In the' yill-shop," Jamie replied, waving a hand vaguely in the direction of where he'd come from. "I ken a few lads, we had some stour-o'-words an' then a round wi' th' deil's books. There was a habble-hobble though... but I'm halescart!"

"In the ale house. I knew a few lads, we talked a bit and then played a round of cards. There was a little bit of a rumpus but I'm safe and sound!"

"Dinnae kerk me Doctor! I'm no randy! I'm just drussie... an' drucken," Jamie insisted, wobbling a little.

"Don't scold me Doctor! I'm not a ruffian! I'm just drowsy...and a little drunk."

"Gorsh Doctor! I'm just drussie! Leave me alone!" Jamie insisted, fighting the Doctor's efforts to get him to lay down on the infirmary bed.

"Gosh Doctor! I'm just tired! Leave me alone!"

"It's just a yill-shop!" Jamie protested. "I'm no randy!"

"It's just an alehouse! I'm not a ruffian!"

"Well Doctor? Do I have th' cling?" Jamie asked.

"Well Doctor? Am I sick?"

"Ye are a fair cawn aoul Doctor!" Jamie said, standing up slowly. "Now will ye help me tae me bed?"

"You're a very cunning person, Doctor! Now will you help me to my bed?"

I was really excited to see more love for Two and Jamie! Hooray for you!

Okay so, things I love: the Doctor being so concerned of Jamie! He's a good guy.

Things I don't: It seemed to me that the 'joke' of the story was that Two didn't get what Jamie was saying, and so he assumed head trauma or illness and freaked out-- but the Doctor's never shown the least sign of not understand Jamie, in the show, so this comes off as confusingly out of character. Was he was worried about the words Jamie was using or that Jamie was uncoordinated or slurring? Because I would have thought that either the TARDIS would have translated them for him, or he would already have learned what they'd meant. He's a smart guy, and Jamie's never been shy about being Scottish.

Final thought: I don't think you really need the glossary and the translated play by play-- it's kind of awkward and disconcerting? The whole thing makes sense in context, I don't think readers need it spelled out to them so exhaustively. Especially the things that are just phonetic renderings of his accent, like 'swoorn = sworn'.

I think that's it! I'm happy there's another fan out there of Two and Jamie, and I look forward to the next thing you write about them!
