iPhone/iPad apps

Since I'm starting the
whoverse_las (Whoverse Last Author Standing) challenge I'm going to hold off starting another 30 day meme til that ends, but I thought instead I'd start posting app reviews/recommendations for friends that have iPhones, iPads or iPod Touches. :) I'm kind of an app addict, with 283 applications sync'd to the phone and more than 400 in my full collection. It's not entirely up to date but I try to keep my app listing over at Appshopper as up to date as I can :)
So first up, texting apps!! Since AT&T wants $20 a month for unlimited texting I said "NO WAY" and I don't have texting in my plan. Instead, I have a few texting apps but there's two main ones I use: Textfree and TextPlus.
Textfree is the main one I use. I got an email address when I purchased the paid version (there's also an entirely free version), KnitChick @ Textfree.us that my friends text me at. It supports Push notifications so I get a pop up with the beginning of the text. Only downside is it can't do picture mail.
I have one friend whose phone doesn't like TextFree so with her (and if I want to send a text to multiple people at once), I use TextPlus. Similar idea, also sends a Push, but instead of an email it's a texting short code with my name added in (it says "KnitChick" on the texts I believe). (This is showing up as available for iPad in my iTunes)
I also have TextNow but I haven't really used it much since TextFree and TextPlus work so well. (This also shows as an iPad app)
Twitter! Well I'm still hunting around for more Twitter apps, but I've got a couple I've been using.
There's the official Twitter app. I downloaded it but I don't use it much. It's okay but I'm not in love with it.
The first Twitter app I downloaded, and still one I use a lot is TweetDeck. It's free and I've got it on my MacBook as well (and I think it's available for PC too). The nice thing with TweetDeck is it has columns, so if you follow a boatload of people like I do, you can create lists in Twitter (like for me, I've got celebrities, newsfeeds, LIS friends, etc) and then have those show up as columns in TweetDeck. Great for when you have a group of friends that tend to have lengthy conversations amongst themselves, then you don't loose other tweets in there. It also supports multiple accounts for Twitter plus Facebook, Myspace, Google Buzz, Linkedin, and Foursquare.
When I don't use TweetDeck I've been playing with Echofon, cuz I noticed several friends using it. I like the push notifications for @ replies (just for those who use Echofon, though I can buy the $4.99 version and get push notifications for all @ replies). I've also got it on my MacBook. It's not bad and easy to use.
I also have Twit-notify and Twitcasting. Twit-notify is like a streamlined Twitter app but I'm not thrilled with it. Twitcasting I played around with on the Fourth of July, it's like Ustream, where you stream live video. It was okay but it crashed after a few minutes.
Two other apps in the same folder with the Twitter apps and then I'll call it a night:
Facebook and Foursquare.
The Facebook app is the official one, and free. It's not bad, though I wish I could do more with event administration from the app. There are push notifications and you can choose which ones you get (like I set it that if someone friends me or tags me, I get a notification but not when there's a comment on a post).
Foursquare is an addicting game app. You "check in" places you go to and get points. You can also earn badges for certain things like a swarm badge if you and at least 50 other people check in to the same place. It notifies Twitter and Facebook of check ins and achievements (if you set it to).
A similar app to FourSquare is My Town, where you check in places and earn cash & points for each check in. Then you can purchase places you've checked in at and collect rent on them, using the cash to upgrade your properties. Kind of like Monopoly meets Foursquare.
I'll stop there, I hope this helps some people! :) I'll continue later with more apps!

Date: 2010-07-27 01:16 pm (UTC)last night i hooked up my iphone and opened itunes. I made a new ringtone. I couldn't get it to move to my ihpone! I couldn't get my current ringtones on to my computer (for back up) and I couldn't put music on my phone.
I did upgrade to OS4 and apparently there's Os4.01 now that wants an upgrade.
Do I need to do the upgrade in order to be able to transfer or did Apple finally make it to where you can't put ringtones on unless they are bought from apple
