Day 30 – Whatever Tickles Your Fancy
I've been procrastinating on this last day of the meme because frankly I'd run out of ideas for the "Whatever tickles your fancy" days (srsly there are too many!)
So I've finally decided, I'll give y'all a preview of a Doctor Who story I'm working on right now (first fic I've written in months actually, I've been running up against horrid writer's block). It's just the start of it, and I don't know when it'll be done because I'm still trying to figure out the full plot but I've been dying to share it. :)
It started out as a perfectly ordinary Thursday. That should have been the first clue, Jack thought later. Thursdays were never normal.
Jack was working on paperwork at his desk, alone in the Hub. Ianto had reluctantly left to take care of the shopping, ordering Jack to finish his paperwork before the Rift tried to spit out something else. He was just starting to feel his eyes crossing from the legalese the Crown insisted on coating these forms with when a familiar sound broke his focus.
"Doctor!" Jack said, grinning as he ran toward the Tourist Office, knowing the Doctor likely would have landed right on top of the invisible lift. He snagged his coat from the coatrack as he ran, pulling it on with practiced ease. Flipping open his wrist strap, he tapped a few buttons and unlocked the Tourist Office door remotely, breezing through it moments later. It took very little time for him to reach the large blue box sitting on the Plass. Jack reached into his pocket and pulled out the key that he'd kept safe, through centuries on Earth.
"Doctor! What brings you here?" he called, opening the door and leaning inside. There was no answer, from either the Doctor or whoever was travelling with him. "Doctor?" he asked again, looking around the strangely quiet console room. He noticed that it seemed a bit dark, the time rotor wasn't lit up and the console seemed to be missing a few lights.
A moment later, Jack felt a tug on the hem of his trousers. He looked down to see what looked like a little doll standing beside his boot. Jack bent down and picked up the doll, holding it at eye level. He noticed it was wearing a long brown coat, blue suit, red and white shoes and had a fluffy mass of dark brown yarn for hair.
"Jack! You need to help us!" the doll squeaked.
Jack nearly dropped it, startled to hear it speak. "Wait... Doctor?"
"Yes! Donna's here too, I think she's near the console! You need to help us reverse this, before anyone finds out," the Doctor squeaked.
Jack just stared at the Doctor. "Wait, what exactly happened? How did this happen?"
"No time! I'll explain later. First, we need to get Donna, I want to make sure she isn't hurt. She was near the part of the console that exploded," the Doctor explained.
Jack slowly walked around the console, which was still smoking and shooting off the occasional spark. When he reached the far side, he saw a second little doll laying on the deck near the railing. Holding the Doctor carefully in one hand, he knelt down and picked up the other doll, which had bright red hair and was wearing a dark pantsuit and white trainers.
"Donna?" Jack asked. He noticed a few strands of her hair were singed, and a small burn hole around her waist. "Donna? Are you all right?"
"Donna???" the Doctor called from Jack's other hand, a worried tone to his voice.
Slowly, the little yarn Donna opened her eyes and looked up at Jack. "What happened? Doctor? Where's the Doctor?"
"Right here," Jack said, bringing his hands together so the Doctor could examine her more closely.
"Donna? How are you feeling?" the Doctor asked.
"Like a brick wall hit me! What happened? Why... why do you look like you're made of yarn?" she asked.
"Because it seems we both are," the Doctor replied. "The drive failed spectacularly while in mid-flight and this seems to have been the side effect."
"You mean that experimental drive that you stole from that strange two-headed bloke failed and turned us into little knitted DOLLS?" Donna snapped.
~ * ~ To be continued... ~ * ~
I've got a little more written than that but this is just a teaser ;) Let me know what you think of it so far!!
