Doctor Who meme: Day 18
Day 18 – Whatever Tickles Your Fancy
Hmm... well since today (well, technically yesterday now) was Big Finish Day and I splurged on four Doctor Who audios from them, let's make this a Big Finish post! I'll talk about some of my faves, and if you like Big Finish please tell me what ones you think are good so I have ideas what to grab during the next sale or at Chicago TARDIS!
I haven't listened to or bought a lot of them yet, but what Big Finish titles I have so far I absolutely love. The first one I bought was Land of the Dead, at Wizard World a couple years ago. I was chatting with Gene from Alien Entertainment and he gave me a discount if I bought one of the older titles. (smart man, that's a good way to get someone addicted ;) That one is interesting but it's not my fave.
This year at TARDIS I went digging through the older titles that were a little less because I had $20 left and I wanted something that Rob had written so I could get him to sign it. I found Scherzo and said, this looks interesting. I brought it over and had him and India sign it. India said it was her fave (and wrote that on the cd too!). I can see why -- it was REALLY interesting, spooky but cool. I love it!
I've also had friends send me some, like Storm Front that I listened to just before TARDIS (good timing, then I knew who my friend Ali was cosplaying!) and Doctor Who and the Pirates which is hilarious and wonderfully entertaining (who knew Colin could sing?).
Of course, I'm an old-fashioned gal so I have always kind of enjoyed the old style radio plays. Heck, I've recorded a couple (I kind of forced my cousins into one... I couldn't get them to do any more). So Big Finish really appeal to me. I do like the normal audiobooks -- I tend to prefer to read but I have always liked audiobooks that were read by really good actors that I like: George Takei, David Tennant, Gareth David-Lloyd, John Barrowman, etc.
Some of the other audiobooks I really like: The Sin Eaters read by Gareth is a must-listen! Especially when he does Jack (Jack shouts. A lot. It's hilarious.) I forget the title of the particular audio we were listening to but on vacation with
wtf we listened to an audiobook her husband had found, read by Catherine Tate, that was wonderful. She is such a skilled comedienne that there were times it really didn't even sound like her! Anything David reads is terrific -- I never cease to be amazed at how he can read the narration in his natural Scots accent and then immediately drop into the Doctor's British accent, or Rose or Jackie (his Jackie is a riot!) Is it bad that I really really REALLY wish there were an audiobook with Jack in it to hear how David would imitate Jack?
I'm looking forward to listening to the Dresden Files audiobooks, whenever book one arrives at my library (that's the one volume that's backordered, grr!) -- I was cataloging some hot audiobooks when we were kind of swamped and discovered that James Marsters reads them. :)
So anyway that's a selection of audiobooks I like! Tell me what else is good and I should start looking for! (I do have a bunch more that I didn't list here, because they weren't spectacular or I haven't listened to them yet - there's about *counts* wow, 34 audiobooks in my iTunes that I haven't listened to yet, most of them Doctor Who).
