Happy New Year!
Well here I am, watched the New York countdown with Dick Clark (OMG I can't believe he's still doing NYRE! Go Dick!!) and now ABC has moved over to Chicago for the local countdown. They just showed the yummy food at Heaven On Seven (ha, was just at the Naperville location on Monday!) and they're switching around to different sites.
So, what happened this year? Well I rang in 2009 with Carole and Joanna at Joanna's apartment. We wrote up our goals for the year and it just occurred to me a little while ago I remembered that Carole said we wouldn't be ringing 2010 in together. She was right but not in the way we thought or hoped. We thought one of us might be out of the country, not in the hospital. :(
I started 2009 unemployed and heading into my second semester of graduate school, taking reference and cataloging. Shortly into the year, I joined Anime Central staff, working in the Special Needs and Compliance department. I aced cataloging, and somehow (I don't know how) got an A in reference as well (HOW? I SUCK AT REFERENCE!) Right after the semester ended, on my way to Acen, I mailed off an application for a cataloging position at Naperville Public Library, never dreaming I'd get an interview! I thought I had a better chance at the Addison Library position I applied for at the same time. But I got the call, interviewed, and got what is pretty much my dream job.
I stood in my cousin's wedding in June, it was a beautiful day despite the bit of rain in the morning. I spent the summer commuting to Naperville and taking a semester off school because there really wasn't much in my area of specialty to take (Technical Services, why must it be neglected so?)
I attended my fourth Wizard World convention, this time as an Acen staffer. I hope to do that again in 2010, it was lots of fun sitting at the table and expounding the awesomeness that is Acen to people! (plus I hear a Dalek may be wandering the con, heh heh).
I attended my second Chicago TARDIS in November. HUGE contrast from my first TARDIS. Last year I was alone, most of my friends did not go, and I had to scoot early on Friday and Saturday to run lights for ARFTCo. This year, Carole and Naomi joined me, Ali came in from Texas, Stacey and I got a hotel room and were joined by new friend Liz, and then I made a BUNCH of new friends there!!! I entered my first Masquerade, didn't win anything but still, I enjoyed the experience. And the people who did win deserved it :) Plus, last year I really barely interacted with the guests (of course, tbh, I had to leave early so I missed LobbyCon). This year, well, Tony Lee figured out who I am (he tweeted about it), and I spent more time just chatting with the guests. There aren't many cons that you can do that at!
So now it's the end of December. I had my six month evaluation at work, I can't believe it's already been six months! I love my job, the only thing that would be more perfect is if it were full time or at least had health insurance.
What am I looking at for 2010? Well, first trying to get a second class for the spring because the section of cataloging I was in got cancelled (NOT HAPPY). I need six hours to get my health insurance through the school.
I'm gearing up for my second year staffing Acen, my department had a partial changeover in staff (Carole & I stayed on, we added two new people, my friend Stacey and a great lady Arleen) -- we are officially a department of Doctor Who fans! :D We've had the first all-staff meeting of the year, and I realized just how much I thoroughly enjoy those! I love the Acen staff, everyone is just so wonderful. And our fearless leader Rosa is just amazing, I admire her so much!
I'm looking forward to another year at Wizard World, hopefully I'll be able to staff the Acen table again and get in free, and just sneak away for a bit to see my cyber-twin-sister Mina at her Artist Alley table and get exterminated by Dalek Sec. :D
I'm also already looking forward to next Chicago TARDIS. Our little friend circle this year (*cough* okay maybe not SO little) is going to grow, we think it's going to be more of a room BLOCK since a few other friends saw our constant tweeting all weekend and said "I WANNA GO!" And I think next year, we need to get the hotel room til Monday, so we can hang out at the tail end of LobbyCon.
Other goals? Get some more fanfic written (I've been stuck lately), win NaNoWriMo again since I didn't this year, finish my TARDIS blanket and some more WIPs, knit a proper canon Doctor Who scarf (before Acen), get my Fourth Doctor costume together in time for Acen, get an iMac, and hopefully get closer to finishing my degree (cuz it doesn't look like Dominican's gonna make it possible for me to finish by December like I planned).
Anyway...HAPPY NEW YEAR'S EVERYONE!!!!! 12 more minutes for Chicago, Dad's getting the Asti opened. :)
