Hello all!

I just wanted to take a minute to let everyone know about a special charity event I am participating in next weekend. This year I am participating in the Relay for Life to help raise money for the American Cancer Society.

My friend Carole ([livejournal.com profile] huskyfriends) formed a team under Starbucks, we are the Espresso Bean Brigade, because she has lost far too many family members to cancer. Even though I do not work for Starbucks I joined in because I have been saying for years I want to participate in Relay and her forming a team was my impetus.

I have family that has both survived and lost the battle. My grandmother is a long time survivor, but unfortunately her sister (my great-aunt and Confirmation sponsor) is currently battling a recurrence of her cancer. I had a special teacher in high school, Mrs. Carol Papierski, who fought breast cancer very bravely, but lost her battle several years ago. I always think of her when I make some kind of contribution to breast cancer research. Also, Peter Tork (of Monkees fame), a favourite musician of mine, is battling cancer right now. These are just a few of the people I will be walking for.

Why am I posting here? Well, every Relay participant is requested to raise at least $100. Each person is given a personal participant page where people can donate. We can also take offline donations.

You can also join in at the Relay itself. We are a part of the Highland Park/Deerfield Relay, and our team is Espresso Bean Brigade. Our Relay is taking place from 6 pm Saturday, May 30th until 6 am Sunday, May 31st. We still have room for more team members if you want to walk with us!

Also, we have a special fundraising event going on, especially for Torchwood fans! I'll paste the press release from BurnGormanOnline because I couldn't say it better than the wonderful release Melissa and Tami put together does!

Every year, the American Cancer Society is benefited by the efforts of people around the world who take part in or sponsor someone for the Relay Race For Life. This year is the 25th Anniversary of Relay Race For Life, and fellow Torchwood fan Carole Brown is one of those taking part. She and the folks at BurnGormanOnline have teamed up to campaign in the fight against cancer, and are offering a unique chance to help.

Carole will be running in a white lab coat in the style of our very own Dr Owen Harper, and just like Owen, her coat will be bedecked with badges and buttons – which is where you come in! For a donation of just $5 to the American Cancer Society, you can have your name on one of our official coat buttons, and for $10, you will get the official badge PLUS one of your own design on the coat. If you would like your own copies of the badges shipped to you, then details can be arranged by contacting Carole directly at carole926@gmail.com.

Following the Relay Race For Life on May 30th-31st, Carole’s lab coat and all its buttons will be auctioned by BurnGormanOnline.com, with all proceeds going to the Teenage Cancer Trust – and you never know, we might even have an additional little surprise included in the lot!

All donations to the American Cancer Society should be made through Carole’s official sponsorship page, along with something in the comments box to indicate that the donation is for the button campaign. And please remember to leave your name as you would like it to appear on the button!

If you would like to choose the $10 option and have a button of your own design on the coat as well, please submit artwork to admin@burngormanonline.com with the following specifications:

* The buttons are 1.25 inch diameter, so your document should be 1.25 inches square, with sufficient bleed (a few extra pixels larger than the finished size on each edge) to allow for the button-making process.

* Please make sure that any text you include will be readable at the finished size – if in doubt, print it out!

* Please avoid using mature language in your designs, as there may be children involved.

* Images should be 300ppi, and saved as a PNG or a high-quality JPG.

If you have a design but are unsure how to make it meet these requirements, you can send it to admin@burngormanonline and our graphics team will make any necessary adjustments for you.

All designs for buttons and donations for standard buttons along with your name must be submitted by the 21st May to allow for production, but of course any regular donations will still be welcome after this date!

You can also send artwork to me at KnitChick1979CJH@gmail.com and I can fix it up too. That's what I'm going to be doing today with my personal button designs. Feel free to PM or email me if you're interested in a copy of your button, as well! :)

So please, donate or join in! Cancer is stubborn so we need to be even more stubborn!

Thanks, and I return you to your regularly scheduled LiveJournal madness :)
